Characteristics of CRRP from the Capacity Building Series
When I first studied about Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy (CRRP) in York University, I immediately felt connected to it. CRRP focuses on knowing learners in a space, knowing communities and bringing their culture and knowledge in our classrooms. As a culturally responsive educator, I understand that
it is important to have socio-cultural consciousness and therefore, reflect on our biases.
having high expectations from all students in the class increases performance of all students because they see that the teacher holds positive and affirming views about them.
being an agent of social change can make difference in the life of students who have always remained at low level of achievement charts.
having a constructivist approach promotes inquiry based learning because it builds on students creating new knowledge based on their natural curiosity about their own experiences.
it is important to have deep knowledge of the students by building strong relationship with the students' families.
students should see themselves in the learning happening at school which is achieved by bringing CRRP teaching strategies in the learning environment.
For the practicum EDPR 4000, I taught CODING in Mathematics during my block period.
One of the lessons in coding, involved programming the microbit to work as a dice. As an educator on CRRP path, I decided to do this lesson because dice is used in games all over the world. So, students in my class could
immediately visualize their learning goal and success criteria
better understand the lesson and the coding instructions.
students saw themselves in the learning happening at school
they used their prior knowledge to construct new knowledge.
Attached is the lesson plan for the coding the microbit to work as a dice.
